Beach Day Safety: Lifeguard-Approved Tips for Families Visiting Ocean City, MD

You’ve booked your stay, packed the beach bags, and counted down the days.  Your Ocean City, MD vacation is finally here! But before the kids race toward the waves, take a moment to review some simple (but important) beach safety tips.

At Explore OC, we’ve gathered the top lifeguard-backed advice to help families stay safe, relaxed, and fully focused on the fun.

Top Beach Safety Tips for Families in OCMD

Talk to Your Kids About Rip Currents

Before you even set foot on the sand, have a quick family chat about rip currents (aka rip tides).
Teach your kids:
👉 If caught in one, don’t fight the current.  Swim parallel to the shore until free, then head back in.  Most importantly, stay calm. A little knowledge goes a long way toward safety.

Use Life Vests for Weaker Swimmers

Whether you’re at the ocean, bay, or pool, water can be unpredictable; especially for kids who aren’t strong swimmers. For younger children or anyone needing extra support, a USCG-approved life vest (meaning it meets U.S. Coast Guard safety standards) adds peace of mind and lets everyone enjoy the day with confidence.

Parent Tip: Look for the USCG approval label inside the vest, and make sure it fits snugly but comfortably.  It should stay secure without riding up when the child is in the water.

Only Swim When Lifeguards Are On Duty

Whether you're at the ocean or a pool, lifeguards make all the difference when it comes to safety.

In Ocean City, the Beach Patrol’s golden rule says it best:  "Keep your feet in the sand until the lifeguard is in the stand."  That means no one should enter the ocean until lifeguards are on duty; typically from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the summer season.

🏁 Swim between the flags.
🌊 Check in with the lifeguard for current conditions.
👀 Always keep an eye on your swimmers.  Even with a guard present.

For pools, be aware that some may not have lifeguards at all. If that's the case, supervise closely and use life vests for young or inexperienced swimmers. The same smart habits apply whether you're in the surf or by the pool deck.

Take Full-Family Breaks to Refuel

Instead of splitting up, plan designated breaks where the whole group cools off together.  Hit the Boardwalk for water, snacks, shade, and yes, more sunscreen. These breaks help prevent heat exhaustion and keep everyone easier to track throughout the day.

Stay Safe, Then Dive Into the Fun

Beach days are all about memories and a little prep goes a long way. With these safety tips in mind, your time in Ocean City will be equal parts relaxing, exciting, and worry-free.
